At the PHAALS Foundation, our primary goal is to raise money and distribute it directly to ALS-affected families in need. LOU GEHRIG’S DISEASE IS A PROGRESSIVE, NEURODEGENERATIVE DISEASE Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a progressive, neurodegenerative disease that damages motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. The disease causes these nerve cells to shrink and disappear, taking away the body’s ability to speak, swallow, walk and eventually breathe.
